Overweight and obesity are epidemics found worldwide. They affect individuals of all ages, young and old. Here in the United States, the prevalence of these conditions ranks high among other developed nations. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 300,000 of adult deaths in the United States each year are attributable to unhealthy dietary habits and physical inactivity or sedentary behavior.
The following statistics were pulled from "Prevalence and trends in obesity among US adults" (written by Flegal KM, Carroll MD, Ogden CL, Johnson CL), a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1999-2000. They show the hard facts of how overweight and obese the U.S. and the rest of the world is becoming.
1. Nearly two-thirds of U.S. adults are overweight
- All adults (20+ years old): 129.6 million (64.5 percent)
- Women (20+ years old): 64.5 million (61.9 percent)
- Men (20+ years old): 65.1 million (67.2 percent
2. Nearly one-third of U.S. adults are obese
- All adults (20+ years old): 61.3 million (30.5 percent)
- Women (20+ years old): 34.7 million (33.4 percent)
- Men (20+ years old): 26.6 million (27.5 percent)
Here is a chart that will allow you to look up your current weight to see what category you would fall into versus the rest of the population. Keep in mind this is a general guide to just give you an idea, it is not exact.
The prevalence of being overweight and obese has steadily increased over the years among both genders, all ages, all racial/ethnic groups, all educational levels and all smoking levels. What does this mean for you?
If you fall into any of these two categories, then you are more likely to be affected by diseases like hypertension (high blood pressure), high blood cholesterol, cancer and heart disease. You are also more susceptible to a higher mortality rate, which means you could lower your life expectancy by 5-15 years.
Until now, we have been seduced by all the fad diet plans, weight loss supplements, fat catchers and point systems available to supposedly help us lose weight. Instead of helping us to shed the pounds, they have only made the problem worse. There are just too many options available and too many people who are confused to make the right decision.
